Falling into the Food Industry Without a Food Background

When I was at the University of Leeds, studying Geography and Management, I never imagined I’d end up in the food industry. My decision to study these subjects was pretty straightforward: I loved Geography at A-Level, and I thought that a background in Management would be a practical way to open doors for my career.

The idea of a placement year seemed like a smart move to gain real-world experience, so I started applying for graduate schemes in my first year. To be honest, my approach was pretty scattergun—I applied everywhere from Sainsbury’s to Peugeot, P&G, and Mars, targeting roles in location planning or marketing. After completing online assessments and attending in-person assessment days, I was thrilled to be offered a marketing role at Sainsbury’s.

At the time, I accepted the Sainsbury’s offer without hesitation. I thought working in the food industry would be interesting and relatable, even though I didn’t have a food-related degree. Little did I know, taking this placement would become one of the best decisions of my career.

Why the Food Industry is for Everyone

It’s easy to think that the food industry is only for those who studied food, agriculture, or something closely related. After all, there are plenty of people in the food sector with these degrees. This can feel a little intimidating, especially if your background is in something different. But the truth is, the food industry needs people with all sorts of experiences—and that’s where people like you can make a real difference.

A degree in geography, business, or even the arts brings a unique perspective to the food industry. From marketing to logistics, sustainability to innovation, teams thrive when they are diverse in skills and backgrounds. The knowledge I gained from my management studies has been invaluable in the food sector, and my passion for geography has made me more aware of sustainability issues within the food system. It’s all about applying what you already know in a new context.

A Call to Women Already in the Food Industry

For those of us already in the food sector, it’s clear that our industry thrives on diverse perspectives. Whether you come from a background in business, marketing, technology, or sustainability, your unique skills and experiences contribute to the vibrant, ever-evolving landscape of food. The food industry isn’t just about production—it’s about understanding consumer trends, driving innovation, improving supply chains, and making a real impact on sustainability and packaging.

As the food industry continues to grow and diversify, it’s crucial that we recognize the value of diverse backgrounds. The work we do—from building trusted brands to transforming food systems—is only enriched by the variety of expertise we bring to the table. Whether you’re shaping the future of food sustainability, designing new consumer experiences, or pushing the boundaries of food technology, there’s always room for more ideas and fresh perspectives. Let’s continue to lead the way, using our collective talents to create a stronger, more inclusive food industry.

You Belong Here, and Your Impact Matters

The beauty of our industry is that no matter your background, everyone has the opportunity to make a difference. The food sector is evolving, and its future depends on the contributions of people like us—those with passion, innovation, and a drive to improve systems that impact daily life.

As we continue to shape the food industry, it’s important to remember that it’s not about where you started—it’s about what you bring to the table now. With your expertise, passion, and commitment, you’re helping build a more sustainable, inclusive, and impactful future. Let’s keep pushing the boundaries together and inspire others in the process.
